Anna Marešová: Whoop-de-doo

Polish designer Anna Marešová has taken on the preconceptions of the sex toy in a beautiful way with her concept Whoop-de-doo collection. These gorgeous and minimalist objects are yet another example of how much this industry has matured and come out of the shadows of its gaudy and embarrassing past.

She developed the project to “highlight the fact that even such a complicated topic deserves attention, and that it can be understood with ease and grace demolishing the prejudices that are created during the past centuries.” Hopefully we aren’t in as woeful a state regarding sex as she seems to fear, but it doesn’t hurt to have one more brilliant mind making strides for mainstream acceptance.

Nexus: Stilo

No, its not the next Google phone, and it’s got nothing to do with short lived androids…it’s an awesome, slightly futuristic looking steel dildo. The Stilo by Nexus is aimed at the male market, and as such has a slightly less curvy and more “gun inspired” look. I’m not sure how I feel about the idea that men would rather have gun shaped things inside them, but I can’t say it’s not an attractive design.

And apparently it has perfect contours to suit the needs and desires of the discerning gentleman. So, unless you want people to know you’re NOT a discerning gentleman, I suppose you should start filling that shopping cart (euphemistic overtones not intended).

Variance: Festoon

Variance is sick and tired of jewelry that can’t stand up to the rigors of life (in bed). With each piece made using gemstones and high strength stringing material, you’ll be able to use your jewelry the ways you always wanted: to bind, gag and leash yourself (in bed).

Inspired by Victorian jewelry, Festoon is a cleverly disguised ball gag. But even if it doesn’t end up in your mouth by the end of the evening the smoky quartz, gold and sterling should still do a decent job as an accessory. The rest of their collection is equally elegant, and subtly kinky, and you can be sure that they will live up to expectations (in bed).

beneLIGNI: object of my dreams

While I find the use of fiery red swirls as a background objectionable, there is no questioning the beauty of these hand carved wooden dildos from beneLIGNI. Each of these sculptures are made completely by hand. Not even a lathe or bandsaw is used to get a rough form. Considering the personal effort involved in each, the pricing is actually reasonable. Especially when ou compare it to some mass produced toys.

And if the toys alone aren’t enough, they also have an amazing line of Tetris inspired storage/display boxes. I would love to have a wall of toys displayed in these.

Studio Oooms: The Milkmaid

This may not be the first hollow ceramic toy we’ve laid eyes on, but it is definitely the only one commissioned by the Dutch souvenir project and initiated by the European Ceramic Work Centre. The Milkmaid, a piece by Oooms design studio is inspired by the Johannes Vermeer painting “Het Melkmeisje” bringing a playful twist to both subject matter and canvas alike.

I have a feeling the memories you’ll make milking the maid will be at least as good as the ones you bought it to memorialize. I think I might be due for a trip to the Netherlands.

SI HOY NO TENGO FLORES

Even if you don’t have flowers, at least you can still have a good night thanks to CompeixalaIgua Design Studio. Si Hoy No Tengo Flores is a dual purpose ceramic vase guaranteed to make even lonely nights bearable. In the tongue-in-cheek words of the artist “…if I have flowers today, I’ll have a date and I might have a great night; but if I don’t have flowers (si hoy no tengo flores…) I’ll always have the dildo to guarantee myself the great night!”

So cheer up, being dateless doesn’t have to mean having a boring evening. In fact, it could turn out a lot better!

shebop: porcelain pleasures

The handmade Porcelain Pleasures line of toys from SheBop are only available to those lucky enough to be able to get to their flagship store in Portland. Sometimes the best examples of thoughtful no-frills modern design is produced far from a factory.

These monotone toys are the perfect combination of form and function. It is great to see small manufacturers stepping in where major producers have failed. Heres to more talented artists and designers taking things in to their own hands.

Lelo: Sensemotion

It seems like there’s no shortage of new ideas in the sex toy world these days. Especially with regard to teledildonics, or at least pseudo-teledildonics. This trio of toys coming September 15th from Lelo may not quite match the Realtouch in that department, but it is pushing the boundaries.

Sporting an “industry first” motion-sensor technology that makes these remote control toys operate by gestures (from up to 39 feet away!) the Lyla, Oden and Tiani sure seem to be stepping ahead of the pack. Should I be on the lookout for the Lelo: Wiimote next? or perhaps a LeloKinect?

Whatever we see from Lelo or others I can tell you this: features like cordless, rechargeable and multiple vibration levels are no longer differentiators. I can’t wait to see where this takes things.

Didier Faustino: Doppelgänger Kissing Mask

While some might classify it as more faux-educational art piece than a sex toy, the Doppelgänger Kissing Mask is an intriguing device none-the-less. Certainly it can’t be argued that it provides far less functionality than any number of other toy designs featured on these pages. In the exploration of sex and what it’s many aspects mean to our culture, I might go so far as to argue this is even more interesting than a Fleshlight.

After all isn’t kissing the “gateway drug” to all manner of dildo related activities? I see no reason to leave it out of the equation. Didier Faustino’s commentary on intimacy via controlled segregation created by the two piece facial mask is quite interesting. Crafting the “perfect kiss” by means of a 3D printed apparatus is as engaging an idea as any I have found exploring the world of sex toys.
